In this three weeks internship in March 2022, the PhD Candidate Joao Moreira had the opportunity to work with Dr. Michele Migliore at the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche in Palermo, Italy.
The student had the chance to interact closely with Dr. Migliore and the people in the lab, exchanging work experiences and making valuable connections.
Dr. Migliore's group had worked for years in a morphologically detailed model of the Olfactory Bulb, which incorporates physiologically accurate behavior with interactive visualization tools. It makes this model an excellent scientific and teaching/learning tool.
This project was a joint effort between Dr. Dura-Bernal and Dr. Migliore to strengthen collaboration with other groups interested in Computational Modeling and that could benefit with the use of the NetPyNE tool.
The goal of the internship was to update the code to make it compatible with the more recent versions of the Python package and the NEURON simulator, and also start working to extend its compatibility to NetPyNE.
The possibility to travel to Italy and spend three weeks exchanging ideas, implementing changes and receiving feedback made this internship an extremely valuable research experience.
